Fun Facts about Dalmatians

The breed is named after the region Dalmatia, Croatia. It is fuzzy as to how the breed originated.

Most people commonly associate the Dalmatian as the mascot for Fire Departments. The versatility of the Dalmatian has been used as war dogs, hunter, shepherd, and performer.

Before being a mascot for the fire Department, Dalmatians were used as a coach carriage dog. Their purpose was to be a guard dog and escort for horse drawn carriages. They are seen depicted in period artwork running beside a carriage and clearing a pathway through crowded streets.

Dalmatian puppies are born solid white. They do not get their spots until a few weeks after birth.

Their personalities are high-energy, affectionate, and intelligent. They can be stubborn and standoffish. These dogs are no couch potatoes. They like to get plenty of exercise.

The average size of a Dalmatian spots range between dime size to a quarter. Most spots range between black and liver in color. Each Dalmatian’s spot pattern is unique like a fingerprint.

Meet Pepper

Pepper is one of the latest arrivals at Zane's Zoo. This spunky Dalmatian is 2 1/2 feet in length and strikes the perfect pose every time. Pepper garnered his name not because of the black spots that dots his coat but because of his love for pepperoni.

Pepper is waiting for adoption at Zane's Zoo and comes with a children's book.
