National Writing Pen Day

There's virtually a National Day for anything under the sun and probably on it. Who determines these things? Like a National Love A Lady Bug Day? Really! Well, with no great fanfare or Hallmark Movie Season to promote National Writing Pen Day it slid right by us on June 10th. Yep, no great to-do for the lonely ballpoint pen. Who cares. We have email, emojis, LOL's and any form of electronic communication to express ourselves. And Lawd help us, autocorrect has created quite a few awkward situations, as well as, group messaging. Truly, I didn't mean for Aunt Bertha to know I hated her green bean casserole and that odiferous loud perfume she wears. Smells like she's been hanging out at a French brothel. (At least that was what momma used to say). Good thing I didn't mention the mole on the side of her neck that looks like the third eye. Whew, dodge the bullet on that one.

One could easily argue that the need for writing instruments are joining the death march of quills, inkwells, and typewriters. But, according to statistics there maybe hope. Every second, more than 125 ballpoint pens are sold. A whopping 3.4 billion pens are imported into the U.S. each year. A ballpoint pen will write approximately 50,000 words or about 100 pages of text.

With all this new found knowledge that the demise of a writing pen may be prolonged, I really wish someone would teach the post-electronic generations the art of writing thank you notes. But, that is another blog for another day. One thing is for sure writing pens come in many shapes, styles, sizes and provide different writing experiences for the user. This is why not one size fits all when it comes to selecting the perfect writing instrument.

The Southern Pen Giftshop understands this and carries a variety of different writing pens. We actually have pens made by Zippo. Yeah, the lighter people. We even have one with the Zippo flames on it. Each provide a smooth writing experience.

Maybe, I might give one to my Aunt Genie for Christmas. She is still a true believer in airing her grievances and opinions in letters. There's nothing like a curt handwritten letter from her. I think a few politicians and presidents have been on the receiving end of her letters. As long as Aunt Genie is around, the art of lettering writing with pens will have a heartbeat.
